Hitchin Town Centre Initiative
Who funds and supports the Initiative?
Funding comes from North Hertfordshire District Council, Hertfordshire County Council, national retailers, local landlords, traders, financial institutions and professionals. The Initiative is supported by Hitchin Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Hitchin Forum.
Why does Hitchin need an Initiative?
Hitchin Town Centre needs to respond to changing circumstances in retailing
and leisure facilities. There is increased competition between neighbouring
towns and particularly from the development of out of town retail and leisure
parks. The ability to shop via mail order, the Internet and TV/Radio has had
a further impact on the traditional role of the High Street.
It is vital for Hitchin to maintain its competitive edge, attract new customers and ensure repeat visits.
What are the Initiatives aims and objectives?
Make the Town Centre a better and more prosperous place.
Improve the retail offer.
Create an accessible, safe and high quality area for the benefit of residents
and visitors.
Encourage events and activities which will raise the image of the town and
promote it as an attractive, lively place which people will want to visit
and return to.
What are the Initiative's goals?
To create a successful Town Centre by effectively co-ordinating public and private sectors together with the whole community.
Who runs the Initiative on a day-to-day basis?
The Initiative is run by the Town Centre Manager, Keith Hoskins. He is not a council employee but employed directly by the Initiative. Keith is available to talk to local organisations and school groups on Town Centre Management.
