North Herts Sanctuary relies on donations. Local Churches and their congregations can be very helpful with material gifts particularly around harvest time. This is very gratefully accepted at a time when the shelter gets very busy. This is an extract from the Norton Parish Community Newspaper for Autumn 2002.
"Every year the Church donates the gifts from the Harvest Festival to a Charity. For the past few years they have been divided between the Noel Day Centre and The North Herts Sanctuary and this year will be no different. In view of the quantities of food, fresh, tinned or dried, that are collected, it was decided to ask the two groups what was most needed- The answers were quite interesting......
The Sanctuary requirements included a list of "DO NOT WANT" - Baked Beans, Soup, Spaghetti Pasta, Tea and Soap. Some of these they do not use very often and all of them they have in large quantities already (enough tea for the next two years!!!)
Useful things are: Breakfast Cereals and Biscuits (they can never have enough), Sugar, Coffee, Tinned Stewing Steak and Minced Beef Tinned Tomatoes, Tinned Potatoes & other Vegetables, Tinned Custard & Tinned Rice Pudding.
In the Toiletry line: Disposable Razors, -Deodorant, Shower Gel Hair Shampoo, Shaving Foam, Combs, Hair Brushes, Toilet Rolls, Tissues. If possible also socks and underpants.
Obviously anything donated is welcome, but it does seem to make sense to actually donate what is needed and can be used rather than goods than have to be stored for months and months, or even years. Please think of this when you decide what gift to give at Harvest Festival as it is always good to know that what is given will be gratefully received."
Our thanks to Vicar John Luscombe, Curate Mark-Aaron Tisdale and the Parish
