Think you have a virus from Hitchin.Net?
Aren't viruses and spam the bane of life online? Hitchin.Net gets it's fair share of both per month - over ten thousand on average!
There are a portion of emails asking why we are sending out viruses in our emails. Although no-one can guarantee total protection against this we take every precaution to make sure that our systems are safe and if everyone took these precautions maybe online life would be better for all.
GET ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE - it's amazing that some people still don't take this simple precaution.
KEEP-IT-UP-TO-DATE! - just as amazing really.
Regular system updates - closes security holes as soon as they can be. No emails about the lack of security of certain operating systems please! The larger the target the more attractive it will be.
Disable macros - if you don't need them don't leave your system open.
Don't preview emails - it's simple for spammers to verify an email address. Images contained in emails link to web servers. They'll know that the email address is valid; how often it's read and even if you pass it on to other people. Viewing the subject line only stops this information from being passed.
Only open attachments you are expecting - you would be supicious if you received a letter from a stranger so why not emails?
Don't keep addresses in your contact list - a bit more inconvenient but if you do get an infection the virus won't be able to use your friends as a source for new addresses.
Install a firewall - hardware or software.
Make sure you have a way that people can identify you - using an unusual signature will help. Viruses will often appear to be from people other than the original sender. See our Flash presentation on "email spoofing" for how this can happen. Emails from any source at Hitchin.Net will display a distinctive but consistent signature. If you receive emails without this please delete them as they won't be from us.
Don't forward hoax emails - Honestly, Bill Gates won't be emailing you and asking you to send emails to all of your friends and that joke that seems so funny isn't when you are receiving a few dozen copies exactly the same per day
Hopefully you are already taking these precautions and aren't contributing. We take a lot of precautions to secure our email network and get annoyed by the amount of virus/spam email that we (appear to) receive from ourselves. With our email addresses in lots of address books we are bound to attract more criticism than most.

many great images of the town. It would be selfish of us to hog them all to
ourselves so we are offering the chance for you to use some of these images

We don't allow free commercial use but welcome people to use images on their site. You cannot download and install these pictures on your own web server but can link to the graphics hosted on our server. All that is reqwuired is that you ask first! Simply fill in the form on our content use page including the image URLs that you would like to lnk to and that's it.
If you are a commercial web site and would like to use some images we are quite happy to discuss use on an individual basis too.

Well, there is always something happening in the town. You may want live music, Live Circuit is North Hertfordshire's free local music ezine. Of course you could always try looking at our whatson guide. or other local online media. If you are in the area the Hitchin Initiative office and other local shops have event details - strolling around the town is a nice way to keep up to date with events and get excercise!
